Boswella is a standardized extract of Boswellia serrata, also known as Frankincense, a large branching tree found in the hilly regions of India that has been traditionally used by Ayurvedic herbalists for centuries. The bioactive constituents of Boswellia, Boswellic Acids, have been shown in scientific studies to aect key enzymes involved in the maintenance of healthy tissues. Boswella's unique method of action is through the selective inhibition of 5-LOX leukotriene formation.
5-LOX is a lipoxygenase enzyme that oxidizes omega-6 fatty acids to form leukotrienes. Normal aging is associated with increasing levels of 5-LOX, contributing to biological responses that have been linked to common degenerative effects of aging. The typical modern diet may contribute to leukotriene formation due to the abundance of foods rich in omega-6 fatty acids. An excess of omega-6 fatty acids triggers overproduction of the 5-LOX enzyme.
